Artist Bio
Ouddhena Eronigca Teern
Ouddhena Eronigca Teern is a multi-award-winning visual artist with a specialisation in mixed media and Batik artistry. Her credentials include an Oxford education-endorsed Master’s degree in Fine Arts (MFA) with a concentration in Arts and Humanities. Her journey as a curious global explorer had even led her to dwell amidst the enigmatic headhunters of Borneo, a chapter that enriched her with profound insights into their mesmerizing way of life. She orchestrates exhibitions, imparts wisdom through holistic painting workshops, and forges connections through seminars, embracing a pedagogical methodological approach that harnesses art as a non-clinical therapeutic conduit. Her approach to art casts light upon the pressing issues of mental health and the importance of cultural preservation. Inspired by the whimsicality that resides within the hearts of children and fueled by altruism, Ouddhena’s philanthropic spirit has led her to dedicate her time to projects that raise funds, weaving the architecture of essential infrastructures for children in need across the globe. Her literary tapestry is a vibrant blend, nourished by British and American classics, poetry, as well as Biblical parables and psalms.
She cherishes the verses of literary luminaries, including Enid Blyton, Roald Dahl, Lewis Carroll and the beloved Dr. Seuss, Theodor Geisel. Her heritage, a rich mosaic, is embellished with Malay, Chinese, Portuguese Melaka, Baba Nyonya, Tamil and Arabic classics. The melodic verses of Pantun dan Syair Melayu, the legends of valiant Malay warriors in The Legend of Hang Tuah and Hang Jebat, and the tale of Princess Hang Li Poh, a Chinese princess whose fate was intertwined with a Sultan of Melaka, all adorn the chapters of her cultural heritage. The treasury of Tenali Raman Stories, a collection of witty South Indian folklore juxtaposed with Middle Eastern exotic fantasy told in 1001 Arabian Nights in tandem with the spine-tingling ghost stories from the macabre Japanese occupation period in Malaya, recounted by her great-grandmother and echoed by both her matriarchal and patriarchal grandmothers, unfurled like secrets, shared under the soft glow of a slow-burning candle on long monsoon nights. Embedded within her lineage is a legacy of creative souls, the strong matriarchal figures adorning her family tree, each a luminary in their own right, bearing the titles of storytellers, hand-crafters, seamstresses, and midwives, among others. Her artistic palette transcends the conventional, interweaving meticulous visual literacy planning with the intuitive and meditative essence of Batik. This ancient craft, harnessing fluid wax-resist techniques and the brilliance of naturally-derived dyes, breathes life into her canvases, transforming them into ethereal realms of dreams and escapades. This practice, with roots tracing back to her ancestral Malaysia (formerly Malaya), resonates across Asia and Africa, where each civilization embraces its unique iteration under different monikers. Her art is in the collection of Berjaya Group, YMCA Malaysia, Emirates Group, Malaysian Embassy in Helsinki, as well as in the homes and businesses of private collectors worldwide. Presently, Ouddhena finds solace in a tranquil haven in a fairytale country where she dines with the elves and dances under the stars with the twinkling fairies and spirited reindeers in her garden while the celestial angels chime at her antics, beneath the enchanting spectacle of the sparkling Northern Lights, continuing her artistic legacy with endless innovation inspired by the charm of motherhood, her vibrant anthology of dreams and insights, extraordinary voyages, vintage books and quirky characters.
